About the research

Research objective: Based on the results of Phase I, the research team recommended monitoring the constructed utility cuts for two more years, constructing new trenches using the three methods suggested by the research team during Phase I, and instrumenting utility trenches to further understand the mechanisms of trench backfill settlement and load distribution. This project aims to improve utility cut construction practices by continued monitoring of restored cuts and improving the understanding of trench settlement and load transfer through the instrumentation of utility trenches, with the goal of increasing the pavement patch life and reducing the maintenance of the repaired areas.
